Where Everybody Knows Your Name – Do you Know your Customer’s?

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Makin’ your way in the world today
Takes everything you’ve got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Wouldn’t you like to get away?

All those nights when you’ve got no lights
The check is in the mail
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it’s tail
And your third fiance didn’t show

Sometimes you wanna go
Where Everybody Knows Your Name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You wanna be Where Everybody Knows Your Name

You’ve lost at love again
And the more you’re down and out
The more you need a friend
When you long to hear a kind hello

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee’s dead
The morning’s looking bright
And your shrink ran off to Europe
And didn’t even write
And your husband wants to be a girl

Be glad there’s one place in the world
Where Everybody Knows Your Name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna go where people know
People are all the same
You wanna go Where Everybody Knows Your Name

As a teenager I loved the USA 80’s TV show Cheers about the bar on the corner in Boston.  For me at the time it seemed the ultimate place to be somewhere where people know you, know what you want to drink and welcome you as a friend.  I was also a great Friends fan and again longed to have a coffee shop like theirs where yet again people know you, knew what you liked to eat and drink and welcomed you as a friend.  Today I am lucky enough to have that in local shops in St Boswells and Melrose and my local bookshop and cafe Mainstreet Trading always welcomes me by name.  How does it make me feel?  Well just like these TV series I feel known as an individual, appreciate they know what I like and yes it makes me feel as if I belong.

Its got me thinking though with my marketing hat there are two important marketing lessons here.  The first is that you need to do all that you can to make sure that you know all your customers as individuals and treat them as such.  It is human nature that we want to be acknowledged as an individual and made to feel unique.  It means alot to be called by your name and if you are a frequent visitor to a business made to feel special for doing so and thanked for your custom.  So look at ways constantly that you can offer the best customer service to your customers and treat them as individuals they will reward you with not only continued business but often additional business plus they will sing your praises to all and sundry.  And the best way of getting new customers is via word of mouth it is the most effective way of getting new business.

So what is the second marketing lesson here?  Well for that you will have to wait for part two coming soon.
