Why I set up in business – to start thinking again.

Just been reading “Likeable Social Media” by Dave Kerpen which is one of the best books that I have read on Social Media.  It is full of lots of great ideas on how companies should market themselves and I got lots of ideas from it which I will use in the future.  It is not a book that is going on the bookshelf but will be sitting beside me on my desk!  I can recommend it.

The book covered all aspects of social media including blogs and gave suggestions for possible topics that people could discuss on their blog.  One of which was letting people know why your company started out.  This got me thinking about the reasons that I with two other colleagues set up in business.

We set up Bright Light Marketing in January 2007 and the business is now five years old!  So why did I leave in a secure job where I had worked since I left Uni in 1992 to set up a new business?

Well there were three main reasons.  Firstly my Bright Light Marketing colleagues and I had worked with one another since 1998 when I came down to the Scottish Borders Tourist Board as Marketing Manager.   Over the years we had often talked about going into business and it suddenly dawned on us that we didn’t need to talk about it we actually need to get on and do it.  When you have a stong business idea it is often worth the risk and just doing it!  So the first reason was to fulfill an ambition to run my own business.

My second reason was that I wanted to get back to marketing.  At the time I left VisitScotland which is what the Scottish Borders Tourist Board had become I was no longer working in marketing but had taken the role as Area Director when all the area tourist boards had become part of VisitScotland.  At the time I took the role on it was a major step up for me and my existing job had disappeared so it seemed to make sense!  But the reality was that I missed marketing and the creative process!  Marketing makes me think!  It was a joke in the Borders office to beware when I came out with the words “I’ve been thinking” which meant a new idea or I had come up with a solution to a problem.  In this new role though that side of me disappeared as I sat in meeting after meeting and my job became a liaison between two public bodies Scottish Borders Council and VisitScotland.  There was no creativity and it made me realise that I had not only been good at marketing but it was actually what I wanted to do!  I could sit in meeting after meeting for the rest of my working life or get back to what made me happy and made me think!

The third reason was I love working with businesses and knew that by setting up a marketing business that is exactly what I would do!  I get a real buzz from meeting a business discussing with them how they can grow their business, attract new customers or set up in business whatever the brief is.  I love coming up with solutions for them and agreeing the way ahead and then the most important part for me actually seeing the business grow as our marketing solution works for them!

So I appreciated Dave Kerpen’s suggestion to write about why you set up in business!  As it gave me time to reflect my original aims which were to run my own business, get back to marketing and making a difference with the people I work with!  And five years on?

Well I am glad that I set up in business I have learnt so much in doing so!  It’s often a rollercoaster of a ride and I am glad we made the decision to set up in 2007 not two years later!  But I have great pride in what we have achieved in the five years we have been in business.  Including the fact that we when the business was relatively young the UK went into recession.  My second  decision to go back to marketing was the right one!  I am thinking again in a creative way!  And have increased my marketing skills from selling a destination to actually selling businesses and their products!  Plus I have added more communication skills to my bow with my knowledge of social media and how it can work for businesses!  And finally my third reason working with businesses.   I still get a buzz making money for clients and seeing what we do for them work for them!

Bright Light Marketing was set up to make words a reality, utilise our marketing skills and make a difference to businesses!  Good reasons for going into buisness don’t you think?

Thanks for inspiring me Fiona. Your article here is a great example of the importance to take stock every now and again in a career and ask yourself “Am I happy doing what I’m doing?”. I’m so proud of what you and the Bright Light Marketing team are achieving. Here’s wishing you all even more success and HAPPINESS in the coming 5 years!
