No Tesco’s, ASDA or Sainsbury’s in March

It is nearly the end of the month and normally I would be confessing my spending habits!  But to be honest I have had such a bad month with one thing and another that yes I have reverted to spending and Mr Boden has done very well this month from me.  That is all I am saying!  Report card is a D minus with much room for improvement.

So I am writing instead about our new venture for the month of March which as the title suggests is not to shop in the main supermarkets for a month but shop locally.

So I thought I would set the scene on the rules that we have set up for ourselves.  We have decided that local has to be places where we would usually shop so St Boswells, Newtown, Melrose and Selkirk are included.  The Co- op is included and yes it is a supermarket but actually for many rural areas like here in St Boswells it is the local shop so it’s in the equation.  We have also decided that we are buying when we need food and supplies rather than having a huge shopping list at the weekend so another aim is to eat our own supplies rather than what we usually do which is to add to them all the time.

Our objectives from this are firstly to see if we can actually for a month do without a main supermarket and what we actually miss in the process.  How we find shopping in local shops and how we source foods that we would usually go to Tesco’s first for such as Mozzarella and Mascarpone.   Finally to see if buying when we need rather than when we want is cheaper or more expensive.  Well a budget has been set up so if I go over it this venture could get really exciting!

So will keep you posted it really I’m looking forward to it!  Now to break it to my son whose favourite outing is a wee trip to Tesco’s!
